Case Study

A New Firewall and 25 PoE Cameras on One Platform

Troeux R&I

Troeux R&I, a licensed private investigation firm, needed to replace an end-of-life firewall and a failing camera system. We moved both onto a single UniFi platform, and stayed with it when the rollout hit a snag.

The Challenge

Two aging systems, one busy office

The firm's firewall had reached end of life, and its camera system was a failing mix of analog and PoE equipment built around an old DVR. For a business that handles confidential work, neither could wait. But an office of about 30 people relies on that internet connection all day, so disruptive work had to happen after hours.

The Solution

Replace both, and simplify

Rather than maintaining separate systems, we brought the network and cameras together on UniFi.

Compared the options

We priced a like-for-like firewall replacement against a UniFi platform, so the client could weigh both before deciding.

Replaced the firewall

We configured, tested, and integrated a new UniFi gateway to take over from the end-of-life firewall, with on-site and remote work.

Added PoE switching

New PoE switching gives the cameras power and data over a single cable, with no separate power supplies to manage.

Removed the old system

We took out the old DVR, the old cameras, and the associated wiring above the ceiling tiles instead of leaving it behind.

Moved video to UniFi Protect

All 25 cameras now record and display through UniFi Protect, with live views on office TVs for the people who watch them.

When It Got Hard

Staying with the problem

Not every rollout goes to plan. After the new gateway went in, upload speeds fell far below what the fiber connection should deliver. We ruled out the configuration and the internet service by testing methodically, then kept the office online at full speed on a temporary gateway while we worked the issue with the manufacturer, including a hardware replacement and after-hours testing on-site, so staff weren't interrupted during the workday. Once the issue was resolved, the new gateway went into full-time service, where it runs today.

The Results

Simpler, supported, and easier to manage

  • 01 A supported, current gateway in place of an end-of-life firewall
  • 02 One consistent all-PoE camera system instead of a failing mixed setup
  • 03 Old DVR and abandoned wiring gone from above the ceiling
  • 04 Network and cameras managed from one platform by their managed IT team
